Kinky Boots - National Tour

The Tony-winning musical featuring a score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.

Tell Us Everything! Kinky Boots' Adam Kaplan Lets You Sneak a Peek at His Road Diary

When we think about our favorite performers, so many burning questions come to mind. What do they like to do for fun? Where do they like to shop? Who are their favorite artists? What food do they love? Would we be BFFs? You think about all of these things, too, right?! Of course you do! So, we decided we wanted some answers and, luckily, those performers were more than happy to indulge us by sharing their road diaries. Adam Kaplan plays aspiring young businessman Charlie Price in the touring production of Kinky Boots, and he told us that he's a big West Side Story fan, can't leave home without his pillow and loves pumpkin fro-yo. Find out what else makes Kaplan tick below!

If I had to describe Kinky Boots in one word, it would be…
Musical. JK JK! Heart.

What do you admire most about your character?
The man is non-stop. He's a modern day British Alexander Hamilton. But instead of building a country he builds boots for drag queens.

The thing I miss most about home is…
My apartment! I mean, my friends and family…that’s more important, right?

What do you love most about musical theater?
For two and a half hours we get to play pretend and, in doing so, make people happy. It doesn’t get much better than that.

What’s something about being a performer that no one prepared you for?
Touring. AKA How to do laundry in a hotel.

What’s the piece of advice you’d give to young performers?
Be kind. It’s always the better choice.

What’s the one thing that has to come with you when you’re on the road?
My pillow! We’re sleeping in different beds constantly, so I try to to have some sort of consistency.

Rank your top three favorite fast food joints you crave when you’re traveling.
1. Jimmy John's
2. Dunkin' Donuts
3. Cook Out (while in the South)

What was the show that that hooked you on theater and performing?
West Side Story

What’s the coolest thing you’ve bought for yourself while on the road?
I just bought a vintage weekend bag in Austin that opens like Mary Poppins’ bag. J. Harrison Ghee told me on a travel day that I needed to improve my "travel look.” Lola always offers the best, and bluntest, advice.

What’s a musical you love so much that you belt songs from it in the shower?
Singin' in the Rain ;)

You only get to bring one book, one album and one movie with you for a year—what are they?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Now That's What I Call Music! 3
Love Actually

What’s the cheesiest joke you know?
Did you hear there was an explosion at a the cheese factory? Yeah! All that was left was de brie.

You have a day off—how do you treat yo’ self?
I sleep in, get a massage, find the local foodie hot spots, get some pumpkin fro-yo, take a nap, find the nearest Cheesecake Factory/PF Chang’s, see a movie or catch up on my programs. Rinse repeat. No singing.
