King of Pride Rock! Disney's The Lion King Celebrates a Record-Breaking Engagement in Atlanta

“Hakuna Matata” means no worries...especially in The Big Peach! The North American tour of Disney’s The Lion King celebrated 12 years on the road on April 27 in Atlanta with a sold-out three-week engagement that grossed over $6.2 million at the box office and entertained more than 97,000 patrons during 23 performances. Now that's a “morning report” that everybody can get used to!

During its stay in Atlanta, the tour grossed the highest weekly domestic gross in its history ($2,402,279 during a nine-performance week ending April 20). This was The Lion King's first time playing The Fox Theatre, having previously played two successful engagements at the Atlanta Civic Center: a seven-week premiere in 2003 and a five-week return in 2008.

“Blockbuster shows like The Lion King draw audiences to our theatre from greater distances and reinforce Atlanta as a leading tourism destination in the Southeast,” said Russ Belin, vice president of Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta, part of the Broadway Across America network. “We are honored to have been a part of this record-breaking engagement, especially as it coincides with a significant anniversary in the show’s decorated history. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the community, the patrons who supported this impressive production and the talented cast and company of The Lion King.”

A lively stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning animated film, The Lion King is the story of Simba, a young lion prince born into the royal family, who idolizes his kingly father, Mufasa, while youthfully shirking the responsibility his position in life requires. When an unthinkable tragedy, orchestrated by Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar, takes his father’s life, Simba flees the Pride Lands, leaving his loss and the life he knew behind. Simba starts anew, but eventually, the weight of responsibility comes to find the adult prince, and Simba must take on a formidable enemy and fulfill his destiny to be king. The score by Elton John and Tim Rice features the songs “The Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.”
