Rain’s Steve Landes Unleashes His Inner Sci-Fi Geek on Halloween
Steve Landes
'Yes, I know I'm a sci-fi geek.'

Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who know a thing or two about rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share their memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore. Read on for inspiration, and Happy Halloween!

STEVE LANDES (John Lennon in the national tour of Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles)

What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
I’ve loved Batman since I was little, so I think I’ve probably dressed up as various incarnations of Batman nearly a dozen times throughout my life, from when I was a little kid to just a few years ago. The first time would’ve been one of the Ben Cooper store-bought costumes, with the plastic mask and “BATMAN” written across the chest in bold, capital letters (just in case you couldn’t tell from the rest of the costume who this kid was supposed to be). I was probably six or seven years old then. The Batman Halloween costume I’ve got now is a little bit more intricate than that one, with the movie-style look: latex body pieces, boots, full cape and cowl. For some reason, I probably had more fun and felt more like Batman back as a kid in that store-bought costume.

What's your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
I love the whole line of Hershey’s chocolates, but Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is a special favorite. But it’s the kind of thing that’s too decadent for me to buy myself, so if I get one while trick-or-treating, I don’t feel too bad about tearing right into those.

What's the worst "treat" you were ever given on Halloween?
Some old woman in the neighborhood gave out hard-boiled eggs one year, which is bad enough when you’re a kid and all you want is candy and chocolate. But I didn’t realize that hard-boiled eggs need to be refrigerated, so it stayed out in my trick-or-treat bag for a few days before the family and I started to notice a horrible smell.

What is your Halloween costume this year?
The same as last year—The Doctor from the British cult sci-fi show Doctor Who (pictured above). To be exact, the tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant; my favorite Doctor ever. Last year, I was having quite a bit of fun dressing up as him with the typical sci-fi superhero pose. And yes, I know I'm a sci-fi geek.
